Maddie Grace has sent in a video audition for a new television show, “Majors & Minors”, to air this fall on the hub network. The new reality show will feature 15 young performers between the ages of 8 and 16. These performers will be taught by the best of the best in the music business to prepare them for their career in music. The coolest thing about the show is that nobody is voted off through the season! Each young performer will leave at the end of the season well mentored for their own music career. One lucky winner will receive a recording deal with Sony RCA/Jive Label Group! There are many talented kids that have auditioned both live and on the internet – we have our fingers crossed that they pick our own Maddie Grace! We’ll keep everyone posted on her progress in the auditions!

The first part of the audition consists of Maddie telling everyone a bit about herself, the second half is a performance of “Wayfaring Stranger”. Maddie Grace will be singing the National Anthem tomorrow morning in Murfreesboro, Tennessee at the TSSAA Boys State Basketball Championships (Murphy Center – MTSU). Maddie is very excited and will be performing in the morning before the days events. Maddie had oral surgery last week to uncover and begin the process of moving a tooth in the roof of her mouth and is still a little sore, but is up to the task. We’ll post an update tomorrow evening to let everyone know how it went!

Maddie after the BBS Women’s Luncheon

Maddie performed for the Boyd-Buchanan School Women’s Luncheon back in November of 2009.  Instead of singing songs by many of her favorite country music female artist, she sang songs from School House Rock!  Here are two pics from after the luncheon.  The first pic is Maddie with Mary Helen Wood.  Mrs. Wood is the Vice President of Boyd-Buchanan and she also arranged for Maddie’s performance at the Luncheon.  The second pic is Maddie with her dad (Patrick Bales).

Maddie had the pleasure of performing for the CRS/CRB Christmas Luncheon at the Doubletree Hotel on December 2, 2010. This was her second year to perform for them and she did an excellent job. It’s holiday time again so Maddie and her dad have prepared many Christmas songs as they did last year. The realtors at the luncheon were very happy with her performance and we want to wish them a merry Christmas. We hope to perform for them again next year.

Maddie Grace was invited to sing the National Anthem at the Regional TaeKwonDo Competition in Nashville, TN on November 13, 2010. This competition was held at the Opryland Hotel and we had a wonderful time. Maddie sang the National Anthem at the awards ceremony for approximately 1,500 people. She did a fabulous job and everyone was extremely complementary. We want to thank Greg Roy for arranging her performance and hope that Maddie can sing for more TaeKwonDo events in the near future.

Maddie Grace auditioned last week for the “Sing Your Heart Out” competition. She performed with 30+ other aspiring young vocalists in her age group. She was selected to perform in the finals at the Williamson County Fair this coming Tuesday! The other contestants in her group were outstanding, so expect an excellent show at the finals. There’s a point in the song when you can see a large bee fly in front of Maddie’s face – she’s slightly jerks away and then smiles. Maddie’s vocal coach was on the deck (also filming) and was stung by two bees on the leg! Between the bees and the 95 degree weather, we had quite an interesting filming experience. We think it was definitely worth it, because the view is beautiful – makes a great backdrop for this song! Thanks to Gene and Christy for letting us use their deck!

We’ve recorded several videos that we didn’t post due to poor video quality – maybe we’re just getting too picky – whatever the reason – we’re getting with it for the summer and will be posting several new videos so stay tuned.

We did it! We’ve finally posted a new video! Believe it or not it’s been four and a half months since our last video post. We’ve recorded several videos that we didn’t post due to poor video quality – maybe we’re just getting too picky – whatever the reason – we’re getting with it for the summer and will be posting several new videos so stay tuned.

Just to update everyone on Maddie – she recorded an original song in Nashville in mid February. Unfortunately we were unable to work out the legal ease to everyone’s satisfaction – so we’re unable to release it – or even say much about it. The short story is that we covered an original song by a writer in another state, they liked what she did with it (and they really liked Maddie in general) and asked if she’d be the artist. We recorded and then began to work out the particulars – their attorney – our attorney – just didn’t work out. Anyway, we have no hard feelings and wish them the best of luck and Maddie will continue doing what she was doing until something else comes along. That occurred from December through the end of February. Since then Maddie has performed on several occasions and basically finished the school year. Now that summer is upon us, we are back at it, hoping to add more great YouTube videos for all to enjoy!

We’d like to thank the people at GraceWorks Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee for having Maddie sing in their service yesterday.  She sang “Grandpa”, by the Judds.  The congregation responded with a standing ovation and everyone was very supportive.  Thank you so much!

Maddie Sings at “Butterflies for Maddie” in Glasgow, Kentucky

This past Saturday Maddie Grace sang at the 5th Annual  “Butterflies for Maddie” 5K benefit race in Glasgow, Kentucky.   “Butterflies for Maddie” was started to raise money for research in hopes of  finding a cure for  P.V.O.D. (Pulmonary Veno Occlusive Disease).  Tony and Donna Morgan lost their 6 year old daughter, Maddie Grace Morgan, to P.V.O.D. in December of 2005.   Maddie’s family and community supporters have been working to raise awareness, develop more effective treatments, and ultimately find a cure.

The Morgan’s found our Maddie Grace searching YouTube  for the song  “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” and came across our Maddie’s version.  They were impressed and  immediately thought of their own Maddie Grace.  They contacted us and asked if Maddie would sing at their annual benefit race.   We were happy to help.

When we arrived in Glasgow, we were greeted by the Morgan family and 1,200 eager runners ready to race to fight P.V.O.D.  Maddie performed “The National Anthem” before the race and later began the awards ceremony with “Butterflies for Maddie”, which is a song that was written for Maddie Grace Morgan.

We were truly touched by the Morgan’s reaction to our Maddie.  They treated us like members of their family.  We were honored to have been a part of this event and hope that Maddie Grace’s fans will visit the Morgan’s website @  http://www.butterfliesformaddie.com and make a donation.  Their Maddie Grace was such a beautiful little girl and we hope that we can do our part to help fight P.V.O.D. and prevent others from falling victim to this disease.   We want to thank the Morgan family for their hospitality, and we hope to have the opportunity to help out next year!!

This past Saturday Maddie sang at a benefit race in Glascow, Kentucky for “Butterflies for Maddie”.   “Butterflies for Maddie” was started five years ago to raise money for research into PVOD (Pulmonary Veno Occlusive Disease).  Tony and Donna Morgan lost their daughter, Maddie Grace Morgan, to PVOD in December of 2005.  Maddie was six years old when she lost her battle with PVOD and her parents and family have been raising money for research into this rare disease hoping to raise awareness, develop better treatments and hopefully a cure so that other children who find themselves fighting this illness will have a chance to recover.

The Morgan’s found our Maddie Grace on Youtube while looking for “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” and found our Maddie’s version.  They were impressed and also immediately thought of their own Maddie Grace.  They contacted us and asked if Maddie could come to sing at their annual benefit race and we were happy to help.

When we arrived in Glascow we were greeted by the Morgan family and 1,200 eager runners ready to race to fight PVOD.  Maddie sang “Put Your Records On” and “American Honey” before the race.  She started the race with The National Anthem and later began the awards ceremony with “Butterflies for Maddie”, which is a song that was written for Maddie Grace Morgan when she was in the hospital.

We were truly touched by everyone’s reaction to our Maddie.  The Morgan’s were so nice and treated us like members of their family.  We were honored to have been part of this event and hope that Maddie Grace’s fans will visit the Morgan’s website at http://www.butterfliesformaddie.com and make a donation.  Their Maddie Grace was such a beautiful little girl and we hope that we can do our part to help fight PVOD and prevent other children from falling victim to this disease.   We also want to thank the Morgan family for their hospitality and we hope to have the opportunity to help again in the future!

Maddie Grace Performs Christmas Favorites!

Maddie and I have been very busy putting Christmas music together for several holiday events this season. We have enlisted the talent of Tim Messer, a local drummer, and myself to quickly provide backing music for Maddie. We have been recording our practices and performances and have been posting them on YouTube since the first of December.

Maddie puts her unique country spin on many holiday favorites.  These may not pass for the greatest country songs ever written, but they certainly fill my heart with Christmas spirit (

We recently performed at the Walden Club for the Chattanooga CRS Christmas luncheon. This video is from that performance. Maddie is singing “Mistletoe Kisses”, an upbeat Christmas song originally performed by David James Webb of Nashville, TN, written by Peggi Spears, Libby Stanton and Ricc Sandoval.

Musical Influences

My favorite types of music are country, pop and r & b.  My favorite country music female artists are Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland and Carrie Underwood, but I also admire Beyonce, Carrie Underwood and Janis Joplin. My vocal instructor tells me that I sing with my heart. I do loose myself in my music and when I sing a song I try to understand what the song is saying so that I can sing it with soul.

Maddie Grace’s New Guitar!

Maddie wants to learn to play the guitar because many of her favorite country music female artists play guitar.  Maddie started taking guitar lessons several months ago and has been using her father’s guitar.   She really needed a guitar that was more her size, so we went to Guitar Center and picked out a full size acoustic with a smaller body and thinner neck so that she could play it easier. After trying numerous guitars, she picked out a black Fender CD140SCE. We felt like this guitar fit the need for great sound and playability, while still looking cool (it also fit her budget). Needless to say she and her dad are both happy with the choice because they can now practice playing guitar together!  And soon, like many of her favorite country music female artists, she too will play guitar!

Maddie started taking guitar lessons several months ago and has been using her father’s guitar (Martin D35). She really needed a guitar that was more her size, so we went to Guitar Center and picked out a full size acoustic with a smaller body and thinner neck so that she could play it easier. After trying numerous guitars, she picked out a black Fender CD140SCE. We felt like this guitar fit the need for great sound and playability, while still looking cool (it also fit her budget). Needless to say she and her dad are both happy with the choice because they can now practice playing guitar together!

Maddie Grace takes on a request from her grandfather to perform the Patty Loveless rendition of the Darrell Scott song “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive”.  This song was originally written by Darrell Scott and was later performed by Patty Loveless.  Maddie’s version of the song is based on Patty Loveless’ version.  This song is one of the greatest country songs ever written.  The haunting lyrics of this song bring to life the plight of a Kentucky coal miner who toils in the mine to support his family and eventually looses his life doing so.  We were immediately struck by this song from the moment we heard it, but as with any song, it takes learning and playing it many times before an artist can truly “bring it to life”.  I think Maddie did a great job and was able to communicate the feeling that the lyrics evoke.  Let us know what you think about her performance.

The haunting lyrics of this song bring to life the plight of a Kentucky coal miner who toils in the mine to support his family and eventually looses his life doing so. We were immediately struck by this song from the moment we heard it, but as with any song, it takes learning and playing it many times before an artist can truly “bring it to life”. This video was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee last weekend. Maddie recorded the vocal in the personal studio of Jason Halbert. Mr Halbert is the musical director and keyboardist for Kelly Clarkson. Maddie’s vocal coach, Diane Sheets, arranged this session and is in the video. Mr. Halbert and Ms. Sheets selected Sheryl Crow’s “Light In Your Eyes” for Maddie to sing. They wanted her to make the song her own and purposely gave her very little time to prepare (that’s why Diane is holding the lyrics for Maddie). Maddie had so much fun in the session and we were very thankful for the opportunity.
